Just this year, our Women's Center was named Louisiana's first accredited Breast Center by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), administered by the American College of Surgeons. Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. Baton Rouge General earned a perfect score, achieving all 27 standards outlined for the treatment of women who are diagnosed with the full spectrum of breast disease. These standards include proficiency in Center Leadership, Clinical Management, Research, Community Outreach, Professional Education and Quality Improvement. Helpful Terms Mammography is a high resolution x-ray exam of the breast that can detect cancer long before noticeable symptoms occur. Annual mammograms are recommended for all women age 40 and older and for younger women with a history of breast cancer. Ultrasound is a painless exam that uses high frequency sound waves to create detailed images of the breast. Ultrasound is most commonly used to evaluate breast abnormalities such as cysts or solid masses found through mammography or other exams. It can also be helpful in evaluating some lumps that can be felt but are difficult to see on a mammogram, especially in the dense breast of young women. MRI is similar to the ultrasound in that it is safe and non-invasive, but it uses a magnetic field and radio waves to produce highly detailed, superior images of the breast. [to top] |
